The Consultant General plays a critical role in delivering high-quality care within the Emergency Department (ED). This position involves managing a diverse range of acute illnesses and injuries, providing stabilisation and definitive treatment to patients, and ensuring smooth patient flow through the department. The Consultant will utilise advanced diagnostic and therapeutic skills to make rapid, evidence-based decisions, particularly in life-threatening situations.

The role requires leadership in a dynamic, high-pressure environment, guiding a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, and support staff to deliver patient-centered care. This includes participating in clinical governance, quality improvement initiatives, and maintaining compliance with national and international standards. The Consultant General will also play a pivotal role in teaching and mentoring junior medical staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and excellence within the department.

As a representative of the hospital, the Consultant is expected to build and maintain strong communication channels with other departments, including critical care, radiology, and surgery. They will contribute to the development and implementation of protocols that enhance the efficiency, safety, and quality of care within the ED. This role is ideal for a highly motivated individual committed to advancing emergency medicine and improving outcomes for patients in Nigeria.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice:

Provide advanced assessment, diagnosis, and management of acute medical and surgical emergencies.

Oversee the stabilisation and resuscitation of critically ill patients.

Perform emergency procedures, including intubation, central line placement, and chest tube insertion.

Ensure timely transfer or admission of patients requiring further specialised care.
