Job Summary
The Key Account Manager will be responsible for managing and growing relationships with major modern trade customers, driving sales performance, ensuring strong in-store execution, and supporting the overall commercial strategy. The role will work closely with retail chains, distributors, and internal teams to deliver volume, visibility, and profitability targets.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Planning & Execution
- Support the development and execution of key account strategies to achieve revenue, volume, and profitability targets.
- Participate in Joint Business Planning (JBP) sessions with assigned retailers.
- Identify growth opportunities within modern trade channels and propose actionable plans.
2. Account Management
- Manage relationships with assigned modern trade chains (e.g., Shoprite, SPAR, Justrite, Marketsquare, etc.).
- Handle negotiations on listings, pricing, visibility agreements, promotions, and trade terms.
- Ensure timely and accurate execution of all customer agreements and promotional activities.
3. Sales & Channel Development
- Ensure strong product availability, shelf presence, and planogram compliance across assigned stores.
- Coordinate with merchandisers and field sales teams to drive in-store visibility.
- Track competitor activities and provide insights to improve market positioning.
4. Performance Monitoring
- Monitor key account sales performance, stock levels, and profitability.
- Track and manage trade budgets, promotions, and discounts.
- Prepare and present weekly and monthly performance reports.
5. Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work with Supply Chain to ensure product availability and timely replenishment.
- Collaborate with Marketing to execute in-store campaigns and activations.
- Liaise with Finance for reconciliation of trade claims, deductions, and account settlements.
6. Relationship & Stakeholder Management
- Build strong working relationships with store managers, category managers, and buyers.
- Support the coaching and coordination of merchandisers and field sales teams assigned to modern trade.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Marketing, or any related field.
- 4–6 years of FMCG experience, with at least 3 years in key account or modern trade management.
- Good understanding of modern trade operations, retail dynamics, and in-store execution.
- Proven experience in negotiations, promotions management, and account relationship building.
Key Competencies & Skills
- Strong commercial and analytical skills.
- Excellent negotiation and communication abilities.
- Good understanding of planograms, category management, and trade marketing.
- Proficiency in Excel/Google Sheets and PowerPoint.
- Strong teamwork, relationship management, and time management skills.
- Willingness to travel within assigned regions.
