Vice Principal Academics Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  1. Academic Leadership & IGCSE Programme Oversight

    Lead the strategic development, implementation, and evaluation of the IGCSE curriculum, ensuring alignment with Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) or Edexcel (Pearson) standards and the school's overall academic goals. Monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and learning within the IGCSE years, providing constructive feedback, coaching, and professional development opportunities to IGCSE teachers. Oversee the effective use of IGCSE assessment data (internal and external) to track student progress, identify areas for intervention, and inform instructional planning. Ensure rigorous internal and external examination procedures are followed, working closely with the Examinations Officer for IGCSE entries, conduct, and results analysis. Promote innovative pedagogical approaches and the integration of technology to enhance IGCSE learning experiences. Lead curriculum review and development for IGCSE subjects, ensuring breadth, balance, and relevance for all students.

  2. Staff Management & Professional Development

    Line manage and appraise designated IGCSE Heads of Department or subject leaders, providing support and challenge to ensure high performance. Identify and facilitate professional development opportunities for IGCSE teachers, including training on new specifications, assessment techniques, and best practices in British curriculum delivery. Foster a collaborative and supportive environment among IGCSE teaching staff, encouraging shared best practices and continuous improvement.Assist in the recruitment and induction of new IGCSE teaching staff.

  3. Student Welfare & Academic Progress

    Monitor the academic progress and well-being of all students in the IGCSE years, intervening promptly with students of concern. Work closely with Heads of Year and pastoral teams to ensure a nurturing and disciplined environment that supports academic achievement and personal growth. Develop and implement strategies to promote positive student behaviour, attendance, and punctuality within the IGCSE cohort. Provide guidance and support to IGCSE students regarding subject choices, academic pathways, and preparation for post-IGCSE studies (e.g., A-Levels, IB, or equivalent).Address student concerns, conflicts, and behavioural issues with fairness, empathy, and consistency.

  4. Community & Stakeholder Engagement

    Communicate effectively with parents of IGCSE students regarding academic progress, pastoral concerns, and programme information. Organise and lead information sessions for parents on IGCSE curriculum, examinations, and pathways.Foster strong relationships between the school and parents, encouraging active involvement in their child's IGCSE journey. Represent the school at IGCSE-related events, workshops, and professional networks.

  5. Operational & Strategic Contribution

    Deputise for the Principal in their absence, assuming delegated responsibilities for the overall smooth running of the school. Contribute to the strategic planning and development of the school, particularly concerning academic standards, curriculum, and assessment.Assist in the effective allocation and management of resources (human, financial, and educational) to support the IGCSE programme. Ensure compliance with relevant safeguarding policies and procedures, acting as a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) or supporting the DSL team.

Qualifications

Education: Master's Degree in Educational Leadership, Administration, Curriculum and Instruction, or a related field from an accredited institution. A Bachelor's degree in a teaching subject from the UK is often preferred.

Experience: Minimum of [e.g., 7-10] years of successful teaching experience, with at least [e.g., 4-6] years in a leadership or administrative role (e.g., Head of Department, Assistant Principal, or similar senior leadership within a British curriculum school).

Curriculum Expertise: Proven in-depth understanding and experience of the IGCSE curriculum (Cambridge and/or Edexcel), including internal and external examination procedures. Experience with A-Levels or IB is often desirable.

Certification: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent from the UK, or demonstrable experience in a British curriculum setting.

NPQH/NPQSL (National Professional Qualification for Headship/Senior Leadership) is highly desirable.

Organizational Skills: Excellent planning, time management, and administrative abilities, particularly in managing examination cycles and curriculum implementation.

Technological Proficiency: Competence in using educational technology, school management systems, and assessment platforms.

Commitment to British Educational Values: A deep understanding of and commitment to fostering an equitable, inclusive, and high-achieving environment aligned with British educational ethos.

Safeguarding: A strong understanding of and commitment to safeguarding and child protection principles.
