The Chief Engineer is responsible for the overall management and maintenance of the vessel's engineering department. This role involves ensuring the safe and efficient operation of all mechanical and electrical systems on board, including engines, generators, and other critical equipment. The Chief Engineer must comply with maritime regulations and company policies to ensure the vessel operates smoothly and safely.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of all engineering equipment, including propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, and electrical systems.
  • Develop and implement maintenance schedules to ensure optimal performance and longevity of equipment.
  • Monitor and control the use of fuel, lubricants, and spare parts.
  • Ensure all engineering operations comply with international and local maritime regulations, including safety and environmental standards.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and drills.
  • Maintain and update safety and maintenance logs and records
  • Supervise and manage the engineering crew, including training, scheduling, and performance evaluations.
  • Foster a collaborative and safe working environment.
  • Address and resolve any personnel issues within the engineering department.
  • Assist the captain and other senior officers in planning and executing voyages.
  • Coordinate with the bridge to ensure smooth operation and response to navigational requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues promptly to minimize downtime.
  • Lead the engineering team in emergency situations, including fire, flooding, and mechanical failures.
  • Develop and implement emergency response plans and procedures.
  • Ensure all engineering personnel are trained in emergency protocols.
