Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Account Officer to manage day-to-day accounting activities, maintain accurate financial records, support financial reporting, and ensure compliance with applicable tax and regulatory requirements.
The successful candidate will be responsible for accounts payable and receivable, bank reconciliations, financial reporting, tax compliance, budgeting support, audit preparation, payroll support, and general accounting operations.
The ideal candidate should have strong accounting knowledge, excellent attention to detail, and practical experience with accounting software and Nigerian tax regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records, ledgers, and books of accounts in line with company policies and applicable accounting standards.
- Record and process daily financial transactions, including sales, purchases, receipts, payments, and expenses.
- Prepare and process invoices, receipts, payment vouchers, and other financial documentation.
- Manage Accounts Payable (AP), ensuring accurate and timely processing of supplier invoices and payments.
- Manage Accounts Receivable (AR), including customer invoicing, collections, receivables monitoring, and follow-up on overdue balances.
- Perform regular bank reconciliations, investigate discrepancies, and ensure timely resolution of reconciling items.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, cash flow reports, and supporting schedules.
- Support annual budgeting and periodic forecasting processes and monitor actual expenditure against approved budgets.
- Prepare and support the timely filing and remittance of statutory taxes and deductions, including VAT, WHT, PAYE, CIT, and other applicable levies.
- Assist with internal and external audits by preparing financial schedules, supporting documents, reconciliations, and responses to audit queries.
- Manage petty cash transactions and reconciliations, ensuring proper authorization and documentation.
- Review and process employee expense claims and reimbursements in accordance with company policies.
- Maintain the company's fixed asset register, including depreciation schedules and asset tracking.
- Support payroll processing by verifying payroll information, deductions, and statutory remittances.
- Prepare journal entries, accruals, prepayments, and period-end adjustments as required.
- Support month-end and year-end closing activities.
- Liaise with banks, auditors, tax authorities, and relevant regulatory bodies on finance and accounting matters.
- Identify, investigate, and resolve accounting errors, discrepancies, and irregularities.
- Ensure compliance with financial policies, internal controls, accounting standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and integrity when handling financial and sensitive organizational information.
- Support the Finance Manager/Head of Finance with financial analysis, management reports, and other finance-related activities.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, reporting, and financial systems.
- Perform other accounting and finance-related duties assigned by the Finance Manager, Head of Finance, or General Manager. Key Performance Indicators Performance in this role will be measured against agreed targets, including:
- Maintain at least 98% accuracy in transaction posting, account classification, and ledger entries.
- Complete monthly bank reconciliations within 5 working days after month-end.
- Ensure timely resolution of bank and accounting reconciling items.
- Submit assigned monthly financial reports within approved deadlines.
- Complete month-end closing activities within 7 working days after month-end, subject to receiving required information.
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation, filing, and payment of applicable statutory taxes.
- Maintain zero avoidable tax penalties, interest charges, or regulatory sanctions resulting from late or inaccurate filings.
- Process at least 95% of complete and approved supplier invoices within 3 working days.
- Issue approved customer invoices within 2 working days of receiving complete billing information.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date receivables ageing schedules and actively follow up on overdue accounts.
- Submit budget-versus-actual reports within approved timelines and accurately identify significant variances.
- Ensure audit documentation and financial schedules are readily available within agreed deadlines.
- Maintain strong compliance with accounting policies, internal controls, and established financial procedures.
- Identify and recommend practical opportunities for cost control, process improvement, and increased accounting efficiency. Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field.
- 3–5+ years of relevant experience in accounting or finance.
- Professional accounting certification such as ICAN, ACCA, ACA, or active pursuit of a recognized certification is an added advantage.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and IFRS/GAAP.
- Practical experience with accounting software such as Sage, QuickBooks, SAP, Tally, or similar platforms.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including financial analysis, reconciliations, and reporting.
- Good working knowledge of Nigerian tax laws and statutory requirements, particularly VAT, WHT, PAYE, and CIT.
- Experience in accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliation, financial reporting, and audit preparation.
- Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to meet strict deadlines.
