Kitchen Assistant

Job Summary:
The Kitchen Assistant at AKTC Guest House is responsible for supporting the kitchen team in the preparation, cooking, and presentation of meals. This includes basic food preparation tasks, maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen, and assisting the chefs with daily operations. The role requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with a focus on hygiene, organization, and teamwork.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Food Preparation:
Assist in the preparation of ingredients by washing, peeling, chopping, and cutting vegetables, fruits, and other food items as instructed by the chef.
Help in preparing simple dishes such as salads, sandwiches, and appetizers.
Ensure all food preparation is done in accordance with the kitchen’s recipes and standards.

2. Cooking Assistance:
Assist the chef in cooking and preparing meals during busy periods.
Ensure the food is cooked to the appropriate temperature and is ready for service.
Handle basic cooking tasks such as boiling, frying, or grilling under the supervision of the chef.

3. Cleaning and Hygiene:
Maintain the cleanliness of the kitchen, including washing and sanitizing kitchen equipment, utensils, pots, and pans.
Clean work surfaces, floors, and food preparation areas to ensure hygiene standards are met at all times.
Dispose of waste, empty trash bins, and follow proper sanitation procedures.

4. Inventory and Stock Management:
Assist in unpacking, storing, and organizing food deliveries in appropriate storage areas (freezers, refrigerators, and dry storage).
Monitor and report stock levels, alerting the chef or supervisor when supplies are running low.
Ensure that all food items are properly labeled and stored according to food safety standards.

5. Food Safety Compliance:
Follow all health and safety regulations, including proper food handling and storage techniques to prevent contamination.
Use kitchen equipment safely, following proper guidelines for operation and maintenance.
Assist in maintaining kitchen logs related to food safety, including temperature checks and cleaning schedules.

6. Assistance During Service:
Help chefs with plating and serving food during busy meal periods.
Ensure that dishes are presented neatly and served in a timely manner.
Assist with any special requests or tasks required by the head chef or kitchen supervisor.
Qualifications and Requirements:

Education:
Minimum of a High School Certificate or equivalent.
Basic knowledge of food safety and hygiene practices is a plus.

Experience:
Previous experience as a kitchen assistant or in a similar role in a restaurant, hotel, or guest house is preferred.
Willingness to learn and gain experience in a kitchen environment.

Skills:
Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
Basic food preparation skills, with attention to detail.
Physical stamina to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks.
Strong organizational skills to ensure the kitchen runs smoothly.

Good personal hygiene and adherence to the guest house’s uniform and appearance standards.

Working Conditions:
The Kitchen Assistant will work in a busy kitchen environment, which can be hot, noisy, and fast-paced, especially during peak service times.
The role requires standing for long periods, lifting heavy items, and working in proximity to hot equipment (ovens, stoves, fryers).
Flexible work hours are expected, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on the needs of the guest house.
