The STEM Instructor specializing in Coding and Robotics will teach students in grades 1
through 12 how to design, build, and program robots, as well as develop foundational coding
skills. The role combines hands-on robotics instruction with coding concepts to foster critical
thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills in students. This instructor will provide a
dynamic, engaging, and inclusive learning environment that encourages students to explore
STEM fields, work with technology, and prepare for future careers in robotics, engineering, and
computer science.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coding and Robotics Instruction:
o Design and teach lessons that introduce and develop coding concepts (e.g.,
programming languages like Scratch, Python, JavaScript, or block-based coding)
for students in grades 1-12.
o Guide students in using various robotics platforms and kits (e.g., LEGO
Mindstorms, VEX Robotics, Arduino, Raspberry Pi) to build and program robots.
o Encourage hands-on, project-based learning where students create functional
robots, code interactive programs, and solve real-world engineering challenges.
o Provide opportunities for students to participate in robotics competitions (e.g.,
FIRST LEGO League, VEX Robotics competitions) and other coding-related
events.
- Curriculum Development & Lesson Planning:
o Develop lesson plans that aligns with both national and state STEM education
standards, with a focus on coding and robotics.
o Create lesson plans that gradually increase in complexity to cater to students'
developmental stages, from simple coding tasks in elementary school to advanced
robotics and algorithm development in high school.
o Design and implement differentiated learning strategies to meet the needs of
students at different skill levels and learning styles.
- Project-Based Learning & Problem Solving:
o Facilitate collaborative, hands-on projects where students work in teams to build
and program robots to solve specific challenges (e.g., robot races, obstacle
courses).
o Promote creative problem-solving by encouraging students to troubleshoot,
iterate, and improve their designs and code.
o Use real-world scenarios to contextualize coding and robotics concepts, such as
automation, artificial intelligence, and engineering design processes.
- Student Assessment & Feedback:
o Assess student progress through coding exercises, robot-building projects,
quizzes, and project presentations.
o Provide personalized feedback to help students improve their coding and robotics
skills.
o Track individual and group progress, adjusting instruction to ensure all students
are challenged and supported.
- Classroom Management & Environment:
o Create a positive, inclusive, and collaborative classroom environment where
students feel confident in experimenting and learning from mistakes.
o Implement classroom management strategies to keep students engaged, focused,
and respectful of the tools and equipment.
o Ensure a safe and organized learning environment, particularly in managing
robotics kits, electronics, and computers.
- Extracurricular Engagement:
o Lead or support after-school coding clubs, robotics teams, or hackathons to
provide students with additional opportunities to practice and showcase their
skills.
o Organize and mentor students for local, regional, or national robotics
competitions and coding challenges.
- Professional Development & Collaboration:
o Stay current with trends and best practices in coding, robotics, and STEM
education through workshops, conferences, and online resources.
o Collaborate with fellow STEM instructors to integrate robotics and coding
concepts into other subject areas (e.g., math, science).
o Share innovative teaching strategies and resources with colleagues to improve the
school's overall STEM curriculum.
Qualifications:
• Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Robotics, Education,
or a related field required. A Master's degree or specialized certifications in coding,
robotics, or STEM education is a plus.
• Certifications: Teaching certification for grades 1-12, or equivalent depending on the
region (e.g., state certification) is required.
• Experience:
o Prior teaching experience in coding, robotics, or STEM subjects in a K-12 setting
is preferred.
o Familiarity with various robotics platforms (LEGO, VEX, Arduino, etc.) and
coding languages (Scratch, Python, Java, etc.) is essential.
o Experience in organizing and mentoring students for coding competitions or
robotics tournaments is beneficial.
Skills:
o Strong knowledge of coding principles, robotics design, and programming
languages.
o Ability to explain complex coding and robotics concepts to students of all ages
and skill levels.
o Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
o Ability to integrate technology into lesson plans and student activities.
o Passion for inspiring students to explore STEM fields and develop coding and
robotics skills.
