Castor Vali is an Africa-focused global firm specialising in security and risk management solutions for governments, multinational organisations and private companies operating in emerging and high-risk markets across Africa and beyond. With our head office in the UK, and nine regional offices in eastern, western and southern Africa, we provide the following services to our clients:
- Corporate Security
- Offshore & Maritime Security
- Security Information Services
Castor Vali is looking for highly motivated candidates to join its growing Security Information Services (SIS) department in Nigeria. The SIS department produces subscription-based and ad hoc assessments to give our clients in Western Africa and the Sahel a comprehensive understanding of the political and security environments in which they operate. These products include dailies, alerts, weeklies, monthlies etc as part of country packages and bespoke reporting such as journey threat assessment and security risk assessments as part of ad hoc assessments.
Job Description
The Junior Analysts have the following core responsibilities within the SIS team.
- SMS/Whatsapp and email alerting
- Junior analysts have the opportunity to lead on alerting for a number of countries of strategic interest to our clients. They will have core countries within their remit in this regard but will also assist team members in other geographies. As such, this role bolsters general knowledge of the entire African region.
- Junior analysts' main responsibility will be to continuously monitor and identify security incidents and trends to produce and disseminate written alerts. They will look at the following threat categories: militancy/terrorism; conflict, including ethnic/intercommunal clashes; crime and banditry; piracy and maritime crime; civil unrest; kidnapping; political instability and violence; extortion; disease updates; infrastructure disruptions; and extreme weather events.
- Ad hoc reporting
- As a junior analyst, you will also be required to assist on other products in the team. This may change from time to time, but may include:
- Short security overviews on specific geographics
- Article contributions to weekly reports on specific geographics
- Assisting on wider research projects on your region, such as journey threat assessments, pre-market entry assessments, and other reports.
- Platform management
- Junior analysts are responsible for uploading and sending reports that fall under their remit on our content management system. These reports need to be uploaded to the system timeously each weekday morning as well at regular intervals in the month.
- Rotation work
- To support our alerting functions, junior analysts will be asked to work one weekend every 5-6 weeks to bolster our coverage of weekend alerting. Team members are granted a day off in lieu of weekend alerting.
- Database management, graphing and mapping
- Junior analysts will assist in managing our incident database to ensure that we have accurately captured alerts across the region.
- They may also be asked to assist in creating graphs and maps for the team.
Qualifications, Experience and Qualities
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- A relevant university degree—such as political science, international relations, intelligence studies, criminal investigations or strategic studies—with a strong academic record (minimum average of 65% or equivalent)
- Impeccable research, writing and analytical skills. Applicants should be able to show that they have worked on political or security issues in Africa.
- A minimum of one year's work experience in political and/or security analysis
- Excellent communication skills
- A can do and positive attitude
- Fluency in French is desirable
- Applicants should have the ability to work with little supervision to tight deadlines
- This is a hybrid position, with the successful candidate expected to work from our Lagos office several days per week
