Role Summary

Our client runs a well-known Nigerian restaurant in Ejigbo, Lagos, known for serving authentic dishes from Enugu and other parts of Nigeria. We are hiring an African Kitchen Assistant to support the kitchen operations and help ensure the restaurant maintains high standards of cleanliness, organization, and meal preparation.

The ideal candidate should be hardworking, disciplined, and eager to work in a fast-paced kitchen that specializes in traditional Nigerian meals, particularly those from the Eastern region.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist cooks with the preparation of Nigerian and Enugu-style dishes such as Ofe Nsala, Ofe Akwu, Abacha, Okpa and Akidi.
  • Carry out basic food prep activities including washing, peeling, slicing, grinding, and seasoning.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy kitchen, ensuring all tools, surfaces, and utensils are properly washed and stored.
  • Support meal plating, portion control, and packaging for dine-in and takeaway service.
  • Restock and organize pantry supplies, ingredients, and condiments.
  • Label, date, and store food items correctly to maintain quality and minimize waste.
  • Promptly notify the cook or supervisor of any damaged or missing kitchen tools.
  • Work efficiently with other staff to ensure smooth meal service and timely output.
  • Adhere to hygiene, food safety, and health standards at all times.
  • Follow all operational and safety procedures set by the restaurant management.

Qualifications and Skills

  • SSCE or OND qualification required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in a restaurant kitchen or similar environment.
  • Understanding of Eastern Nigerian meals and ingredients is a strong advantage.
  • Basic food preparation and kitchen hygiene knowledge.
  • Ability to work quickly, take direction, and remain focused during busy hours.
  • Physically fit and capable of standing for extended periods.
  • Attention to detail with good cleaning and organizational habits.
  • Dependable, teachable, and able to work well in a team.
  • Must be available for flexible shifts, including weekends and evenings.
